Lyon - silk, gastronomy and city of lights

Lyon, formerly silk weaving capital of Europe,  is older than Paris and half its size, has two rivers (Rhone and Saone) and two hills (Fourviere is the "hill that prays" and Croix Rousse is the "hill that works"). It has already Mediterranean flair, friendly and relaxed people, and faster and cleaner transportation (modern tram, RhonExpress to airport, high-speed trains, near-by airport). It is close to the Mediterranean Sea and the Alps. With its 2000 restaurants and a few authentic "Bouchons Lyonnais",  Bocuse progressed it to the culinary capital of France.

The historic 1st and 2nd arrondissements of Lyon form a narrow peninsula between the Rhône and Saône. You'll find boulangeries displaying mouth-watering arrays of pastries, cafés with terraces full of happily snacking locals, and tiny bistros promising intimate atmospheres and decadent dishes.

Rue Mercière, a narrow pedestrian street, is lined with restaurants, including many bouchons unique restaurants to Lyon.

When you like the lights of the city in the evenings then don't miss out beginning December on the magic fetes de luimiere Lyon. Many artistic light installations and projections let the city celebrate in light and fantasy for four days!
